Arts & Culture
Sarasota is known as Florida's "Cultural Coast". There is a wide variety of venues & events to choose from including Performing Arts, Ballet, Theatre, and Music Venues. There is always a festival or special event for residents & visitors alike.

Sarasota was the original winter home for the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. John & Mable Ringling built their 30 room Mansion, the Cà d'Zan, on Sarasota Bay. Avid art collectors, the Ringlings ammassed an extensive art collection which is now on display in The Ringling Museum of Art.  Other notable venues include the Sarasota BalletVan Wezel Performing Arts Hall which features a wide variety of performances,  the Sarasota Orchestra,  the Asolo Repertory Theatre,  to name just a few. Venice also is home to the Venice Theatre,   the most highly awarded community theatre in Florida and the entire Southeast.

Some of the special events held annually include the Chalk Festival where artists create truly amazing displays of art on sidewals with chalk.  Film aficionados will be interested in the Sarasota Film Festival, an annual 10 day event that features hundreds of films and artists from around the world. Past attendees have included Alan Alda, Kevin Bacon, Liv Ullman, and Robert Altman among others.

Selby Botanical Gardens is a 14 acre bayfront property and plant research center that is world renowned for it's collection of exotic plants from around the world, including over 6,000 orchids. There are eight greenhouses that house collections used for scientific research and plant identification. Classes and special events are held year-round.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium on St. Armands Key is a respected research and educational facility focused on the study of  manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems. The Aquarium features two touch tanks as well as a 135,000 gallon shark habitat (touching not recommended!).

These are only a few of the things that the Sarasota area has to offer- there are simply too many for me to include them all!
